Eine freie und offene demokratische Gesellschaft entscheidet sich auch am Umgang mit den Künsten, mit seiner kulturellen Vergangenheit, Gegenwart und utopischen Zukunft, wie sehr sie die Offenheit, die Freiheit und die Vielfalt, die sie auszeichnen, leben und ermöglichen will, wie sehr sie in der Lage ist demokratische Kräfte zu entwickeln.
Ein Museum als Spiegel ist immer auch Utopie, ein Entwurf einer möglichen, zukünftigen, meist aber fiktiven Lebensform oder Gesellschaftsordnung, die nicht an zeitgenössische historisch-kulturelle Rahmenbedingungen gebunden sein sollte.
